The Good And Bad News About Our Power Over Ourselves

There’s good news and there’s bad news, there’s good news and there’s bad news, and there’s good news and there’s bad news.

The good news is as children we have an incredible capacity for absorbing and learning from our surroundings. The bad news is this means we can be deeply affected by the nature of those surroundings. The good news is our capacity to absorb and learn stays with us our entire lives. The bad news is the vulnerability to the impact of our surroundings does as well. The good news is we have the power to choose how much power we grant those surroundings. The bad news is if we don’t exercise that power others will choose for us.

How much is nature and how much is nurture can vary from circumstance to circumstance but the universal consensus among psychologists is that both are always at play and major factors in how we develop throughout our lives. The information we take in is determined by our environment, how we interpret and act upon that information heavily influenced by our base nature. Both our natures and our environments change and evolve over time, sometimes within our control and many times completely outside of it.

There are definitely aspects of our core nature which remain constant and prevalent throughout our lives. We can learn to adapt and function in ways which might run…
