Anger is a natural emotional reaction. We feel it in response to fear, frustration, loss and any number of other perceived threats to ourselves or those we care about. It is an instinctive dose of adrenaline to help us fight against danger, a powerful motivational force meant only for short bursts. It is also all but incapable of seeing anything beyond its own immediate satisfaction.

Sustained rage can be a seductive sensation. The rush of adrenaline makes us feel more powerful and its short-sighted perspective makes everything seem ‘one good whack with a club will fix it’ simple. We feel stronger. All our problems seem simple and immediately fixable. It’s a win-win.

The trouble is that short-sighted perspective is distortedly so and our systems, both mental and physical, are not meant to carry the sustained rush of perpetual anger. Much like the impact of nitrous in a racing engine, if acceleration is maintained for too long the engine begins to break down to the point of complete destruction.

Mentally, emotionally, neurologically if we are not able to release our burst of anger it…
