In our current world where attention is the primary currency one group taking full advantage of circumstances ideally geared for their attention seeking natures is provocateurs. Television pundits, radio personalities, streamers, Youtubers, influencers, and now even more blatantly politicians. Everywhere we turn we are surrounded by people zealously and shamelessly stoking and provoking, seeking to benefit themselves on the backs of our instinctive emotional reactions. Provocateurs.

Desiring attention from others is a natural impulse, in truth it is a primal need. We need to be seen, to be heard, to know that we are noticed and to feel we belong. We make efforts to present the best possible first impression on a date, at a job interview, at an audition, when meeting new people because we are seeking favorable attention and the benefits it can offer. We want a second date, to get the job, to get the part, for people to like us.

There is an outcome we are looking for, a goal we are trying to achieve which will more likely occur if we are able to gain the right kind of attention from the right kind of people. We have a specific goal so our efforts are targeted. The goal is for our date to like how we are presenting ourselves not the waiter, our potential employer’s opinion…
